Project Overview
This project at Residensi Opal, Kajang, is a bold, all-dark apartment renovation where EverKitchen delivered a dramatic interior package centred on a black kitchen with black marble-effect surfaces, a dark feature wardrobe with an LED display niche, a floating wall shelf, and dark ceiling details with warm cove lighting. Every material and finish choice reinforces a single, committed aesthetic: rich, dark, and atmospheric throughout.
Homeowner Habits & Needs
The homeowners wanted a home that made a strong visual statement from the moment you walk in. They needed a functional kitchen with a complete cooking setup and sufficient storage, a built-in wardrobe with a personal display niche for a small figurine or collectible collection, and a living and dining area that felt moody and considered rather than bright and conventional. A dark, unified palette was non-negotiable.
Design Challenges & Pain Points
Designing an all-dark interior in a compact apartment requires precise control of material variation and lighting to prevent the space from feeling flat or oppressive. The kitchen uses a textured dark grey stone-effect laminate for the upper cabinet fronts and backsplash, contrasted against a black marble-effect countertop to create depth within the dark palette. Warm LED strip lighting beneath the upper cabinets and inside the wardrobe display niche introduces amber warmth that lifts the space and gives each surface a glow that reads well even in low ambient light.
Customised Kitchen Cabinets
The kitchen features dark grey textured stone-effect upper cabinet fronts paired with a bold black marble-effect countertop that runs the full length of the cooking wall. A matching black marble-effect backsplash tiles the cooking wall behind the gas hob, creating a continuous dark surface from countertop to upper cabinet base. Warm LED strip lighting recessed beneath the upper cabinet run casts a warm amber glow across the countertop and backsplash. A black gas hob with a black chimney hood sits cleanly in the cooking zone. Open glass-fronted upper cabinets at one end of the run provide a display storage zone while keeping the kitchen wall from feeling entirely closed-in.
Built-In Wardrobe & Display Niche
A floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobe in a dark charcoal matte finish with a small push-to-open magnetic door sits at the entrance corridor, with a recessed open display niche built into the wardrobe face at eye level. The niche is backlit with warm LED strip lighting, creating a warm amber glow that frames a small figurine display and draws the eye immediately upon entering the apartment. The warm-lit niche against the dark wardrobe surface is a deliberate entry moment that sets the tone for the entire home.
Floating Wall Shelf & Entry Details
A floating shelf in warm dark timber is mounted on a textured grey wall at the entry zone, styled with black ceramic planters and trailing green plants to introduce a natural element against the otherwise dark and hard-surfaced palette. The contrast of living greenery against the dark walls softens the entry without compromising the overall moody aesthetic.
Appliance Alcove
A dedicated built-in appliance alcove in dark cabinetry houses a top-load washing machine and provides a concealed utility zone that keeps the laundry area off the main living floor plan. Dark panel doors frame the alcove, keeping the appliance neatly hidden and aligned with the apartment’s all-dark aesthetic even in the utility zones.
Living & Dining Area
The dining area features a rectangular pendant light in black metal with warm exposed bulbs hanging above the dining zone, anchoring the space with a warm focal point within the dark room. Warm ceiling cove lighting runs along the perimeter of the dining and living ceiling, casting a soft amber wash downward that lights the room from the edges rather than from a central ceiling fixture, reinforcing the moody, atmospheric quality of the interior.
Design Philosophy
At EverKitchen, committing fully to a dark palette is a design decision that rewards consistency. At Residensi Opal, every surface, every material, and every light placement was chosen to make the darkness feel deliberate and warm rather than heavy and cold. The result is an apartment that feels like a personal retreat from the moment you step through the door.
