Project Overview
This project at Setia Alam, Shah Alam, is a bold, dark-toned landed home renovation where EverKitchen delivered a striking charcoal grey and white package across the living, kitchen, and study zones. A low-profile white high-gloss TV console with a floating Calacatta marble-effect backdrop panel, a dark charcoal grey built-in display cabinet with warm amber-lit open niches styled with a Bearbrick collector collection, a dramatic charcoal grey kitchen with a large Calacatta marble-effect island countertop, pendant lighting, integrated refrigerator column, and a white matte study zone with a black grid-frame window partition combine to give this Shah Alam landed home a contemporary, confident dark residential character.
Homeowner Habits & Needs
The homeowners wanted a bold dark palette anchored in charcoal grey across the kitchen and display cabinetry, with white and Calacatta marble-effect surfaces providing contrast at the TV wall, kitchen island, and study countertop. A dedicated collector display cabinet with warm-lit open niches was required to showcase a Bearbrick and trophy figurine collection prominently within the living zone. The kitchen needed to be generous in scale with a large freestanding island and bar stools for casual dining and conversation, with pendant lighting above the island as a focal point. A home study or workspace with a white countertop, black grid-frame window partition, and task lighting was required as a dedicated work zone.
Design Challenges & Pain Points
A full charcoal grey kitchen in a landed home requires careful lighting design to prevent the dark cabinetry from making the kitchen feel closed and heavy: the large Calacatta marble-effect island countertop in bright white provides the primary contrast surface, and pendant lighting above the island draws the eye upward and creates warmth within the dark kitchen. The Bearbrick collector display cabinet is the most personal element of the living zone: its dark charcoal carcass with warm amber-lit open niches at multiple heights, each carefully styled with Bearbrick figures, gold trophy figurines, and decorative objects, gives the display cabinet the feel of a curated collector’s showcase rather than a standard built-in shelving unit. The black grid-frame window partition in the study zone adds an architectural detail that separates the study from the adjacent room while maintaining visual openness through the grid.
Living Room TV Feature Wall
The TV feature wall features a low-profile floating white high-gloss TV console with a slim Calacatta marble-effect stone-look backdrop panel behind the mounted flat-screen television, a vertical dark charcoal grey slat wall panel running floor-to-ceiling on the left side of the TV wall, and recessed track lighting above. The combination of a white high-gloss console, stone-effect backdrop panel, and dark vertical slat accent panel creates a layered TV wall with strong material contrast without requiring elaborate cabinetry.
Collector Display Cabinet
Beside the TV wall, a full-height built-in display cabinet in dark charcoal matte finish with open display niches at multiple heights is fitted with warm amber LED underlighting beneath each shelf, casting a warm glow across the displayed Bearbrick figures and gold trophy collection within each niche. The display cabinet combines open display niches at the upper section with closed storage drawers and doors at the lower section, maximising both display visibility and practical closed storage within one full-height cabinet. A large decorative wall clock is mounted above the display cabinet, adding a statement wall detail above the collector showcase.
Kitchen & Island
The kitchen features full-height upper and lower cabinets in charcoal grey matte flat panels, a black induction hob, a black rangehood, and a full-height integrated refrigerator column in charcoal grey flat-panel surround cabinetry. A large freestanding kitchen island with a Calacatta marble-effect white quartz countertop and slim white waterfall edge sits at the centre of the kitchen, with two tan leather bar stools at the island for casual dining. Three industrial-style pendant lights hang above the island on a single ceiling track, providing focused task and ambient lighting above the island surface. A black dish rack and kitchen accessories are visible along the window counter beside the sink, kept practical and accessible within the charcoal and white kitchen.
Study Zone
The home study or workspace features a full-length white matte countertop running beneath a black grid-frame window partition that separates the study from the adjacent room while allowing natural light to pass through the grid. A slim swing-arm task lamp in brushed silver provides focused desk lighting. The white countertop and black grid-frame partition create a clean, focused work zone that contrasts the dark charcoal palette of the kitchen while maintaining the black accent detail used across the handles, appliances, and frame details elsewhere in the home.
Design Philosophy
At EverKitchen, a dark palette done well requires equal confidence in the light surfaces placed against it. At Setia Alam, charcoal grey cabinetry across the kitchen and collector display cabinet is grounded by a Calacatta marble-effect island countertop, a white high-gloss TV console, and a white study countertop: each bright surface earns its place by making the dark cabinetry around it feel intentional rather than heavy.
