This project at M Aruna, Rawang, brings together a dark, dramatic design language across the kitchen, living room, and built-in storage areas. Featuring deep charcoal and black wood-grain cabinetry, a stone-effect TV feature wall with black fluted panel accents, white marble-effect countertops, and warm pendant lighting, the design creates a bold, modern interior that feels curated and confident throughout.
Homeowner Habits & Needs
The homeowners wanted a home that made a strong visual impression while remaining fully functional for everyday cooking and living. The kitchen needed to accommodate a full appliance suite including a built-in oven, refrigerator, and hob, with sufficient counter space for daily meal preparation. The living room required a built-in TV feature wall that served as a design statement, and dedicated storage solutions were needed to keep the home organised without cluttering the dark, clean aesthetic.
Design Challenges & Pain Points
Working with a predominantly dark colour palette across multiple areas of the home required careful attention to lighting and material texture to prevent spaces from feeling flat or closed-in. Integrating a full built-in appliance column, including an eye-level oven and tall fridge enclosure, into the kitchen cabinetry run while maintaining visual consistency was a key design challenge. Coordinating the kitchen’s dark wood-grain finish with the living room’s stone-effect and fluted panel feature wall also required deliberate material selection to ensure the two spaces felt connected rather than competing.
Customised Kitchen Cabinets
The kitchen features upper and lower cabinetry in a deep charcoal black wood-grain finish, paired with a white marble-effect countertop and a textured dark mosaic tile backsplash that adds visual interest behind the cooking zone. An L-shaped layout provides generous worktop space across two walls, with a built-in appliance column housing an eye-level oven and integrated refrigerator enclosure in full-height cabinetry. Under-cabinet LED strip lighting runs the length of the upper cabinets, lifting the dark tones and illuminating the countertop for practical daily use. A globe pendant light cluster above the kitchen area adds a warm, decorative accent that complements the dark cabinetry.
Built-In Appliance Tower
A full-height appliance tower integrates the built-in oven and tall refrigerator into the cabinetry run in a seamless black wood-grain finish. The flush panel doors and consistent colour treatment ensure the appliances read as part of the cabinetry rather than as separate pieces, maintaining the clean, uninterrupted look of the kitchen wall.
TV Feature Wall & Living Area
The living room feature wall combines a large-format grey stone-effect panel with vertical black fluted timber battens framing either side of the TV recess. A low-profile black media console runs the width of the feature wall, providing storage for media equipment while anchoring the composition. The contrast between the textured stone backdrop and the graphic lines of the fluted panels creates a feature wall that works as the clear focal point of the living space.
Built-In Storage
A tall dark grey wood-grain storage cabinet in the living or utility area provides floor-to-ceiling concealed storage with flush panel doors. Its proportion and finish tie it back to the kitchen cabinetry, ensuring the built-in storage feels like a considered part of the overall interior rather than an afterthought.
